Viz Review: Missions to Mars
Did you know we sent 49 spacecraft to Mars so far? Check out this visualization of the historical MISSIONS TO MARS created by author MARYIA MAZIUK to learn more!
Quick Insight
There is a period between 1975 and 1990 where there was virtually no Mars activity, but since then the US has been cranking out missions regularly. The US has landed five rovers successfully, and China one, the only two countries to do so. The big numbers of 31 successful missions and 43 spacecrafts on Mars implies a one-to-many relationship as well. It would be great to see that visualized somehow, as it isn’t evident in the current dashboard.
Design Notes
At first glance it is quite a large dashboard for only two visualizations, but giving everything a little breathing room makes it much easier to connect with. The image of Mars from Nasa is cool and the color schemes of black (space) and red (Mars) goes well. The tool tips and on page definitions also add a lot of value. Both graphs use circles, but I think I like the bar chart style circles better in the bottom viz as it is easier to tell the number. For example, in the top viz a large circle might represent 2 missions or 3, you are forced to hover to find out.
